The City of Frederick is excited to announce that the Frederick Municipal Airport (FDK) was recently awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation of $4,820,151 for the Frederick Municipal Airport Runway Extension Project. These funds will be used to relocate 1,900 feet of the parallel taxiway. The City has awarded the project to C. William Hetzer, Inc through a competitive bid process.
“The Frederick Municipal Airport has become the preferred general aviation airport in the region, and we are delighted to continue to receive FAA and MAA funding to advance the runway and taxiway expansion project,” stated Mayor Michael O’Connor. “With more than 90,000 annual aircraft operations, it is imperative that we keep FDK in top shape to be a safe and efficient economic driver and community resource.”
Last year the City opened the newly extended primary runway (5-23), which is now 5,819 feet in length. The runway extension and taxiway relocation will continue to expand Frederick’s ability to serve the Frederick and the Baltimore Washington Region as the designated general aviation reliever airport. FDK is the second busiest airport in Maryland, after Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall Airport.
“FDK is a strong economic driver in the community, which according to a 2018 MAA Economic Impact Study, supports over 1,100 jobs with personal income of $66,000 annually along with business revenue of over $101 million and local purchases of $37 million.” offered Director of Economic Development, Richard Griffin. “I am proud of the airport team headed by manager Rick Johnson for their incredible work to manage the grant process and keep FDK flying high.”
