Dr. Pete Kremers has been named ‘Volunteer of the Year’ by the Maryland Economic Development Association (MEDA) for his work on Color on the Creek and Sailing through Winter Solstice.

His Color on the Creek concept was originally implemented as a creative solution to mitigate unwanted algae growth throughout the linear park. Hugely successful in both function and appearance, the annual installation has grown to now feature more than 4,000 plants.

Looking to keep the Creek’s beauty year-round, Dr. Kremers helped launch a complimentary winter program: Sailing through the Winter Solstice. This year, the volunteer-driven program featured 18 elaborately decorated and illuminated boats from November - February. Not just for show, the program raises money for area non-profits as the community votes for its favorite winter installation.

As crowds flock to enjoy Carroll Creek’s beauty at all times of the year, Kremers' projects have become strong economic drivers for the City. While not solely attributable to Kremer’s projects, the number of visitors to Frederick has increased by 16.1% & tourism revenue has increased by approximately 16% since Color on the Creek began in 2013.
