Geared towards any small business in and around The City of Frederick, this series focuses on providing a comprehensive overview of how businesses can participate in government contracting, specifically as part of the Small Business Reserve (SBR) program and the Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprise (MWBE) program.
Community Promotion Grant | Grants that Continue to Give
Recognizing the unique impact of our giving community, The City of Frederick created the Community Promotion Grant in 2017 to uplift and support our local nonprofits. The Community Promotion Grant cycle begins every year in the fall, offering nonprofits an opportunity to fund existing initiatives or pilot something new.
Updates from City Parks & Recreation
Our business community is fortunate to lean on a robust system of 75 parks and 6 recreation sites across all neighborhoods in the City. 97% of City residents are within a 10-minute walk or less from a Parks and Recreation amenity. The City’s Parks and Recreation Department offers unique and expanding programming across those areas throughout the year for all ages, and ability levels.

New Spire Arts Plans Next Act Joining With Weinberg Center For The Arts
The Mayor and Board of Alderman of the City of Frederick signed an agreement Thursday night between the City and the Ausherman Family Foundation, handing operations of New Spire Arts Stages over to the City of Frederick. New Spire Arts is transferring assets to the City and dissolving as a non-profit entity to make way for this new and exciting next act. The black box theater, located in Frederick’s Theater District at 15 West Patrick Street, is housed in the iconic downtown building formerly home to McCrory’s Five and Dime.
Frederick County and City Economic Development Partner to Support Underrepresented Businesses
The City’s Department of Economic Development is proud to be the Signature Sponsor of the Frederick County EmPOWER Program- which was created to support underrepresented businesses.
The program offers monthly networking events, a business mentorship program (currently accepting applications), an underrepresented business directory, DEI tool kit, blogs, one-on-one business support, resources and more!

Downtown Hotel Project Secures Key Funding
On February 17, The City of Frederick’s Board of Alderman unanimously approved to accept $2.52 million from Frederick County government to assist in the purchase of the future site of the downtown hotel and conference. Proposed as a full-service Marriott branded hotel, the project will serve as an economic anchor along Carroll Creek - providing new downtown lodging options, stimulating local spending, and attracting future private investment to the area.

On Thursday, November 18th, the Mayor and Board of Aldermen approved of a Resolution to adopt changes to the Purchasing Polices of The City of Frederick. Included in these changes is the establishment of a goals-based Minority and Women Business Enterprise (MWBE) program and a Small Business Reserve program.
